About the Human Era Year

The Human Era Calendar, popularized by Kurzgesagt and originally proposed by scientist Cesare Emiliani, adds 10,000 years to the Gregorian year count. This change establishes a unified human history that starts year observation roughly with the start of the Neolithic Revolution.

By simply adding a “1” to the beginning of the already observed Gregorian year, issues like having no year zero or negative BC/BCE counting are eliminated, and people today can benefit from a clearer understanding of just how rapidly knowledge and innovation advanced in just a few generations.


What are years?

The Earth takes 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds to complete one orbit around the Sun. This is the Solar Year.

Our Calendar Year is 365 days for 3 consecutive years, and 366 days every 4th year, to make up for the extra hours in the Solar Year. This keeps our date and time count in sequence with the movement of the Earth around the Sun.

Years represent the Earth completing a lap around the Sun, which drives the cycle of our seasons. On a larger scale, they also help document the movement of our entire solar system through its Galactic Year.
